Wigan Athletic manager Paul Jewell expressed his sympathy for goalkeeper Mike Pollitt after the veteran went off injured just two minutes into the Carling Cup Final.
Pollitt had to be substituted because of a hamstring injury, which left Paul Jewell disturbingly upset. "I feel dreadfully sorry for Mike. He has spent most of his career in the lower leagues and this was the biggest day of his football life, but he has to come off after five minutes." Explained the Wigan coach.
The experienced goalkeeper, who is to turn 34 later in the week, played a key part in the final even though his role lasted just two minutes.
However Jewell did express his delight at getting to the finals and the players performances throughout the competition. "I said to them I am immensely proud, not just today, but we had been written off before a ball was even kicked by some people, and those players have climbed mountains", said the Wigan chief.
"I can't speak highly enough of them. I can't give them enough praise, not just to the players who played, but those who didn't and who are a part of everything we have done at Wigan", added Jewell.
