Alan Shearer has admitted he was approached by Steve McClaren but all the soon-to-be England manager asked was whether he could speak to him after the World Cup.

Reports came up in the newspapers that McClaren had asked Shearer to be his assistant, however, Shearer insists he was staggered to wake up to the stories.

Whilst it's unknown whether this was definitly the role that McClaren had it mind, it's then another question to whether Shearer would actually accept the proposal.

"I had the briefest of calls from Steve McClaren a few weeks ago, asking if he could speak to me after the World Cup," said Shearer to Five Live's Sportsweek programme.

"Nothing at all was discussed, and I said yes he could ring me - and that is how it was left, so I was staggered to wake up to the stories in the newspapers.

"I have always said I would like a bit of time out.

"Everybody knows I am doing my coaching badges, and in the future it could interest me - but I am quite happy with what I am doing at the moment."
