Sunderland boss Roy Keane heads for Crystal Palace with his mission very much on track.

The 35-year-old former Manchester United captain took over at the Stadium of Light in August with Sunderland struggling at the foot of the Coca-Cola Championship, and immediately set his sights on the long haul to the business end of the division. Four months on, the Black Cats sit 11th and are within four points of the play-off places having established a foundation.

Keane and chairman Niall Quinn will attempt to add fresh momentum during the January transfer window, but the manager is satisfied with what has happened to date. Keane said: "The first challenge was definitely just to get away from the bottom of the table. We could not get ahead of ourselves. We have done that and now the next challenge is to get into the play-offs."
