Steve McClaren has pleaded for patience as he tries to turn England into a team of world-beaters.
The former Middlesbrough manager, who succeeded Sven Goran-Eriksson in the summer, does not believe his suitability for the job should be assessed over a matter of months after an indifferent start to his tenure as national coach.
McClaren said: "Rome was not built in a day. It is where you end up, not where you are after the initial period. It's got to be a long term. You have to develop things and that is what we are going to do."
