Middlesbrough manager Gareth Southgate has admitted he always knew this was going to be a tough season.
Boro's march to the UEFA Cup final at the end of the last campaign disguised their problems in the Barclays Premiership, where they finished 14th, and Southgate insisted he realised when he took over from Steve McClaren a major transition had to be made.
He said: "We knew this would be a difficult season - there is no hiding from that because at one stage last season, we looked like a team in real trouble. That was not going to change overnight. But we are ready to roll our sleeves up for a big game on Saturday."
