England assistant manager Terry Venables has revealed he was initially reluctant to become Steve McClaren's number two.

The 63-year-old, who was national team boss for two-and-a-half years until the end of Euro 96, was worried how he would react to not being the top man and also revealed he is constantly assessing his relationship with McClaren to ensure he is happy in his current role.

Venables said in the Mail on Sunday: "I told Steve from day one that I didn't think I could do the job because it was going to be very frustrating for me. I had been a decision-maker for 30 years. He said to give it a go."
