Scottish Football Association chief executive David Taylor claims Rangers are the one club who could convince Walter Smith to quit as national team boss.

Taylor will hold talks with the Scotland manager after confirming the SFA have received an approach from Rangers. The Ibrox club want former boss Smith - along with Ally McCoist - to return to the club, having parted company with manager Paul Le Guen last week.

But the SFA are equally keen to hold on to Smith's services as Scotland prepare for crucial European Championships qualifiers against Georgia and Italy in March, and Taylor admits losing him now would be a disaster. He said: "If it comes to pass, we would have a managerial disruption at the worst possible time."
