Newcastle United are reeling from an injury to winger Damien Duff which could rule the Irish international out for the rest of the year.

Duff picked up a knee injury during the Magpies' 1-1 draw with Arsenal at the weekend.

He underwent a scan on the joint this morning (Tuesday) and could face up to six weeks out if cartilage damage is discovered.

He is certain to miss Thursday evening's Uefa Cup meeting with Celta Vigo at St James's Park, with a "best case scenario" set to include two weeks on the sidelines for the 27-year-old winger.

The injury comes just as Duff's Irish international teammate, Shay Given, returned following a two-month lay-off.

Given made his comeback for Ireland against San Marino last week and was restored to Glenn Roeder's starting line-up for Saturday's game against the Gunners.
