Middlesbrough manager Gareth Southgate admitted the defender in him appreciated his side's goalless draw at Portsmouth.
Boro's Jonathan Woodgate and Sol Campbell for Pompey staked their claims for England recalls with immaculate defensive displays, shortly before Southgate's predecessor Steve McClaren names the next national squad on Friday.
Southgate said: "I thought we were good value for our point. Jonathan Woodgate was outstanding but we defended well as a team and the midfielders in front of the back four covered really well."
