Defiant West Ham manager Alan Curbishley maintains his side can still stay up despite having watched them lose for the first time since he took charge.

Portsmouth ran out worthy 2-1 winners at Upton Park, where a rare brace for defender Linvoy Primus kept the south-coast club on course for a top-six finish. Although a late strike from veteran Teddy Sheringham saw Curbishley's men rally, it was not enough to rescue what would have been an unjust point.

Results elsewhere on Boxing Day left the Hammers, currently 18th, three points adrift of safety, but Curbishley said: "We are definitely good enough to stay up. I had no illusions when I came in - it is going to be a tough run-in and we have got to be confident enough that we will get out of it."
