Irish satellite broadcaster Setanta Sports has brought to an end the Sky Sports monopoly of Premiership television rights in the United Kingdom after striking a multi-million pound deal on Friday.

Setanta won two of the six packages on offer, at a cost of St£392m, and will begin broadcasting live Premiership football in the UK and Northern Ireland from the start of the 2007/08 season.

The Irish broadcaster will screen a total of 46 live Premiership games a season for three seasons, with the games to take place at three kick-off times: 5.15pm on Saturdays, 1.30pm on Sundays and 8pm on Mondays.

Founded by Michael O'Rourke and Leonard Ryan in 1990, Setanta has gone from strength to strength in recent years and this week's announcement marks their arrival in the big league of subscription broadcasters.
