Irsih clubs advance in UEFA cup

Both Derry City and Drogheda United advanced in the UEFA cup last night.  Derry under the management of former Bohemian boss Stephen Kenny defeated Gothenburg one nil last night and 2-0 on aggregate. Furthermore United defeated HJK Helsinki by  3 goals to one last night  and 4-2 on aggregate with two goals coming from former Bohemian reject Damien Lynch. Derry city captain Peter Hutton was delighted with the result and stated "I'm absolutely delighted for everyone concerned. It's a historic night for everyone involved with the club.

"I think we thoroughly deserved it over the two legs. It was a matter of self-belief, we'd done our homework on them and any of the football played tonight, I think it was played by ourselves." 

Following the success of both clubs they await the draw today with Premiership big guns Newcastle United are among five possible opponents for eircom League side Drogheda United in the Uefa Cup second qualifying round draw this afternoon. The Magpies recently completed the £5m signing of Irish international talisman Damien Duff, while Shay Given and Stephen Carr are the other Irish stars on the books at St James's Park.

Drogheda's other possible opponents are Danish pair Odense and Randers, FC Twente of Holland and Norwegian side IK Start.

The draw takes place at Uefa headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland at 1.30pm today (Friday). 

In other news Champions Cork City were drawn against AC MIlan in the champions league.
