Mikael Forssell boosted Birmingham City out of relegation last night with a late goal in the 87 minute last night at the St Andrews stadium. The Finnish international who has been plagued with injury over the last season but has a very good record at Birmingham becoming their top scorer for two seasons running between 2003-2005.

Forssell who came on for Emile Heskey after 67 minutes fired home minutes from the end with a sensational turn and powerful drive past three Rovers onlookers from 8 yards. This was a welcomed goal for Steve Bruce who looked positively heartbroken on the City bench after Robbie Savage scored in the 78th minute. Savages goal almost saw City rooted in the relegation zone with only three games to play, yet Birmingham City's resilience got its just rewards.

Birmingham and Portsmouth are now both on 32 points and furiously contesting the 17th position place. Portsmouth have had a remarkable run of form recently collecting 11 points out of their last 5 games, the introduction of Argentinean D'Alessandro and Tottenham outcast Pedro Mendes has obviously been a major component to this sudden revival but whether it will be enough to save Pompey is an unanswerable question.
