French sports minister Jean-Francois Lamour has compared the team that beat Spain 3-1 on Tuesday to the triumphant side of the 1998 World Cup and Euro 2000.
Experience conquered youth in Hannover as Les Bleus rediscovered their form to book a quarter-final tie with Brazil on Saturday. A 28th-minute penalty from David Villa put Spain ahead before Franck Ribery levelled four minutes to the break. The victory was then sealed by late goals from Patrick Vieira and Zinedine Zidane, who will retire at the end of this tournament.
"I am so happy, I feel the French team is back, the one that we love so much from 1998 and 2000," said Lamour. "They gave all they had and went beyond their limits while remaining creative."
