Sunderland manager Niall Quinn wants to bring in two new players before Wednesday night's Coca-Cola Championship clash with Birmingham City at the Stadium of Light.

The game will mark the first competitive home outing of Quinn's reign as Black Cats boss, which began with a 2-1 defeat to Coventry City at the Ricoh Arena on Sunday.

And the former Irish international is keen on adding to his squad before Wednesday evening's game - meaning any new signings must be registered today (Tuesday) in order to be eligible for the game.

He said: "We hope to have a couple in place who would come into contention for Birmingham on Wednesday.

"Ultimately before the end of the transfer window I would like two top players fighting for every position, that's my aim. I've got to increase competition and give the squad more depth. Every player needs to be pushed. If that happens, we'll start to take off."
