Giuseppe Rossi marked his first start for Newcastle United with a debut goal as Glenn Roeder's side survived foul weather conditions on Tyneside to book their place in the Carling Cup fourth round courtesy of a 3-0 defeat of Portsmouth.
The on-loan Manchester United starlet struck three minutes after half-time to fire the Magpies ahead on a treacherous pitch and provided them with the platform to see off Portsmouth.
Peruvian midfielder Nolberto Solano made sure of the win five minutes later with a thumping header from substitute Damien Duff's cross, before finishing things off with his second of the night on 90 minutes.
