Middlesbrough boss Gareth Southgate admitted his first taste of derby success as a manager was extra-special after heaping more woe upon Newcastle counterpart Glenn Roeder at the Riverside Stadium.

Yakubu's 85th-minute header powered Boro to their second successive home victory but it was a different story for the Magpies who have made their second worst start to a Premiership season. Southgate will know how Roeder feels, having felt some pressure of his own before silencing his critics by masterminding a recent revival which earned him an ovation at the final whistle.

Southgate said: "There is more relief because there was more tension around the ground and it got through to us in the first half because so many of our lads have grown up in the area. We are almost seen as the underdogs here or perceived as being the smaller club. I think everybody went out there with a point to prove and I am delighted for us."
