Tottenham midfielder Michael Carrick today stated that he hopes to earn a place in the England squad flying to Germany for the World Cup finals.
Carrick put out a solid display against Uruguay, a game in which England emerged as 2-1 winners thanks to goals from Peter Crouch and Joe Cole. "At the start of the game, I wanted to go out and make the most of it," Carrick told Sky Sports News.
The Spurs star earned his place after playing to his maximum throughout Tottenham's season, in hope of getting the call-up to play with England's best footballers.
"It's not every day you get to start for your country at a place like this. I got quite a lot of the ball, which was nice. They sat off, dropped really deep and made it hard for us to thread passes through. We had to be patient and it paid off in the end. It took us a while, until injury time or thereabouts, but it's nice to get a win," said Carrick, commenting on the victory.
"I hope so. I just do my best," said the midfielder when questioned if he had done enough to get into the squad permanently.
Carrick also commented on Spurs' season, claiming they were aiming to achieve fourth spot. "It's a huge end to the season for the club, we want to get in that fourth spot."
However the return of Frank Lampard might halt Carrick's chances of gaining the centre midfield spot and playing alongside Steven Gerrard.
