In League East Anglian rivals Colchester and Southend were both promoted to the Championship with the latter winning the title. The relegated sides were Hartlepool and the MK Dons who could both, only manage a draw. League Two's last day saw Leyton Orient join Carlisle and Northampton Town gain promotion to League One and Oxford United and Rushden & Diamonds relegated out of the football league.

Southend who already knew that they were up this weekend scored a 1-0 victory against Bristol City to win the league. The real battle at the top however was between Colchester and Brentford and with United 3 points to the good over their League One compatriots needed just a point to be sure of promotion. With Brentford only managing a 2-2 draw against Bournemouth in a bitter game which saw both teams lose a player to a sending off Colchester's result was unimportant. They themselves managed to get that vital point away to Yeovil in a hard fort stalemate at Huish Park. Hartlepool's 1-1 draw with Port Vale and MK Dons' stalemate at Rotherham both clubs dropped out of the league.

The big game in League Two between Oxford and Orient saw the O's needing a win for automatic promotion and United a needing the reverse to stay in the league. In an intense affair Orient came out victors 3-2 and saw Oxford down with already relegated Rushden.
