A second half brace from Scunthorpe United striker Andy Keogh fired the Republic of Ireland under-21s to a crucial victory in Thursday's Uefa Championship preliminary round first leg in Baku.
In the newly-restructured under-21 championship, Ireland need to overcome the Azeris in order to advance to a three-team qualification group involving Belgium and Greece later this year.
And they will go into next week's second leg at Kilkenny's Buckley Park as warm-order favourites to advance following Keogh's vital double.
Final score Azerbaijan 1 Ireland 2
