Former England skipper Alan Shearer is backing Michael Owen to prove his fitness ahead of the World Cup finals.
The 26-year-old failed even to make the bench for Newcastle's last Barclays Premiership game of the season against Chelsea on Sunday, leaving him with under five weeks and three international games to rediscover his sharpness.
Shearer said: "I know he's working so hard to try to get there. He was devastated he couldn't take any part in Sunday's game, but he's trying his very best to get fit."
