As Ireland experienced heavy weekend rain and eircom League fixtures fell foul of the un-seasonal weather conditions, the new manager's decision to fly out to sunnier climes was completely vindicated.
With two lengthy training stints already under their belts, Staunton is delighted that his squad has been able to work on the tactics and strategies that he wants them to employ
when the Euro 2008 qualifying campaign starts against Germany in September.
"When I sat down with the FAI a few months ago to discuss our preparations for the qualifiers I knew that it was important that we got through four days of solid work on the training ground," explained Staunton.
"By choosing our base on the Algarve I knew that we would not be left at the mercy of the weather. And that is the way it has worked out.
"I m really pleased with the set up here at the Estrela da Luz hotel and the training ground in Lagos. The facilities are great and we've got through some good work.
"The boys have worked hard over the first two days and that's the way it will continue for the next two before we fly home to Dublin on Tuesday night.
