Middlesbrough have already been refused permission to appoint Gareth Southgate as their new boss. Boro chairman Steve Gibson wants club captain Southgate to replace Steve McClaren, who will take over the England job in July, but the 35-year-old has still got two years to go until he earns the Pro Licence stipulated by the Premier League. League Managers' Association chief executive John Barnwell dismissed Gibson's hopes of appointing Southgate. Barnwell said: "They can't do it - it's as simple as that.
