The Niall Quinn-led consortium on the verge of completing a takeover of Coca-Cola Championship club Sunderland has approached Martin O'Neill to take up the reins at the Stadium of Light from the start of next season.

O'Neill has been out of work since stepping down as Celtic manager at the end of the 2004/05 season to care for his ill wife Geraldine.

Linked with several jobs since then, including the national team manager's positions of the Republic of Ireland and England, O'Neill has thus far refused to return to work - but Quinn is intent on luring him back into management on Wearside.

According to the Sunderland Echo, O'Neill, a self-professed Sunderland supporter in his youth, met with the Quinn group this weekend.
