Odense midfielder Morten Fevang scored a hat-trick to all but end Shelbourne's European dream in Sunday afternoon's Intertoto Cup second round first leg tie in Denmark.
Fevang arrived on cue and unmarked to score three headers in the space of 26 minutes either side of the half-time break.
But Shels striker Jason Byrne will rue his 53rd minute penalty miss, which would have brought the Dublin side back to 2-1 and in with a real chance of taking a decent result back to Tolka Park.
Byrne's spot kick struck the woodwork and the Irish international fouled home keeper Arek Onyszko as the ball rebounded into his arms.
That yellow card means the striker, who has scored 15 goals in all competitions already this season but who started this game on the right of a five-man midfield, will miss next week's return at Tolka.
