Newcastle United manager Glenn Roeder believes goalkeeper Shay Given will be fit for his side's opening Premiership match against Wigan Athletic on Saturday.
Given withdrew from the Republic of Ireland squad for Wednesday's friendly against Holland after picking up a back injury during a Uefa Cup meeting with FK Ventspils in Lithuania last week.
Instead of travelling to Dublin, he stayed on Tyneside for treatment and Roeder feels certain he will be passed fit for the visit of the Latics to St James's Park.
The Magpies boss said: "Shay has a slight muscle strain but he will be okay for Saturday. Ireland manager Steve Staunton has been really excellent and understanding about all this.
