Steve Harper has told manager Glenn Roeder he is willing to play through the pain barrier at Middlesbrough on Sunday to keep hold of the Newcastle goalkeeper's jersey.
The 31-year-old picked up a groin injury against Manchester United on October 1 but has remained in the side for the defeat to Bolton and the UEFA Cup win over Fenerbahce and Harper is in no mood to surrender his place at the Riverside Stadium even though Pavel Srnicek is on red alert for an emotional return for the Magpies at the age of 38.
Harper said: "I have waited five years for my chance and I am not giving it all up without a fight. You will have to knock me out to stop me playing at Middlesbrough on Sunday."
