Late goals from Dean Whitehead and Chris Brown secured Roy Keane his fourth win as manager as Sunderland bounced back from successive Coca-Cola Championship defeats.
Whitehead struck his second goal of the season in the 82nd minute following a spell of concerted Sunderland pressure and Brown headed a second two minutes from the end.
Barnsley made Keane's side fight all the way for the points, but Andy Ritchie's newly-promoted outfit have now failed to win any of their last five league matches.
Keane responded to two successive defeats by recalling forwards Daryl Murphy and Chris Brown to his starting line-up while retaining fellow front men David Connolly and Dwight Yorke.
Kenny Cunningham and Liam Lawrence also returned as Keane made four changes from the side that went down 2-1 at Stoke in midweek. Grant Leadbitter, Liam Miller and Ross Wallace were all dropped to the bench.
