England have reached their best ever place in the latest FIFA rankings released today. Steve McClaren's side have gone up one place, overtaking World Cup Winners Italy. This reflects their joint highest position, which they last reached while they were managed by Glen Hoddle in 1997.

The good start under the new management, with victories over Greece, Andorra and Macedonia has been reflected by the new position, while Italy have paid for their poor form since Germany 2006.

There was good news for Scotland too. Their two victories against the Faroe Islands and Lithuania have resulted in a rapid advance up 6 places to 34th. Northern Ireland were rewarded for their astonishing win against Spain by a massive 14 place improvement to 58th.

While Northern Ireland were careering up the table, Wales were passing them on their way down. John Toshack paid the price for bad luck in the Czech Republic, and are now down 8 places to 62nd, below footballing heavyweights Uzbekistan. Repubilc of Ireland also declined from their last ranking; falling 5 places to 43rd.
