Manchester City manager Stuart Pearce has vowed to sign players "with a touch of leadership" this summer to ensure his side do not go off the rails at the start of next season.
City ended the 2005-06 campaign with nine defeats from their closing 10 games, the kind of form Pearce knows would have spelt relegation if his side had not enjoyed such a good start. Pearce pinpointed the FA Cup quarter-final defeat to West Ham as the catalyst for the demise, a defeat which so shattered his players' confidence they were unable to recover.
Now Pearce faces another test of his credentials as he tries to bring in players during the close season who can help him repair morale, those who can guide and direct when the going gets tough. He said: "We have to go away and have a break from each other, the players have to have a break from each other, and then come back next season ready to go."
