Tottenham Hotspur have hit back at Rafa Benitez, for claiming that Jermain Defoe is on his way out of White Hart Lane.

Benitez responded to reports suggesting that Tottenham were interested in Liverpool ace Djibril Cisse, by saying that Spurs are 'desperate' to sell England youngster Defoe.

"I find the reported comments by Rafael Benitez beyond belief," a statement read on Tottenham's official site.

"There is absolutely no basis, let alone any element of truth whatsoever, in Benitez's claim today that we are looking to sell Jermain," said chairman Daniel Levy to the official site.

However both teams must now try and concentrate on the league and it is vital that they challenge for the top four positions this season.

Liverpool look almost certain to finish in third place, and Tottenham have been made favourites to take fourth spot, but competition is fierce with 3 other clubs all fighting for a place in Europe.
