Wayne Rooney's place in the World Cup squad could be in jeopardy after he had to be stretchered off the field of play 10 minutes from time in the 3-0 defeat to Chelsea due to a foot injury.

The game that saw Chelsea retain the title was slightly over shadowed with worries that the youngster may not make the World Cup. Fans will be hoping that it is not as serious as fist believed after the 20-year-old went into a tackle with Chelsea full back Paulo Ferreira. Rooney boarded the team bus back to Manchester on crutches and will return for a scan tomorrow. Ferguson appeared to rule the England man out of the last two games of the season for Manchester United but was unable to expand on the severity of the injury.

"We will wait until we get to Manchester," Ferguson told Sky Sports 1. "He is in the right hands, we've got the orthopaedic surgeon, the doctor and the physio and he will be looked after. It's a sore one but we will have to wait and see. There's no point making assertions when we don't know the cause or anything." When asked if he was worried about the player's condition Ferguson said "When a player is taken off, you are always concerned. We have had quite a few ones this season - bad injuries - but hopefully Wayne's not a bad one."
