Wenger on Henry

Arsene Wenger fully understands there is much more to Thierry Henry's decision whether to stay on at Arsenal than simply if the club wins the Champions League or not. The brilliant French striker has one more year left to run on his contract, but so far has resisted all the offers to commit himself to the Gunners on a long-term basis yet has stressed the matter will be resolved before the start of the World Cup.

Arsenal remain confident their captain will agree an extended deal to keep him with the club as they prepare to move to the new 60,000-seater Emirates Stadium from next season. There have been suggestions, though, should the north London side go on to win Europe's top club prize in Paris next month, then Henry could consider his work done with the Gunners. Such a straightforward notion, however, is swiftly rejected by Wenger. The Gunners boss said: "You can always interpret it in two ways - when you have won it, why should you stay? And if you have not won it, you have a good reason to go.

"But I still feel that when you commit your long-term future to a club, there is more at stake than that - it must be linked with the quality of the club, with the values of the club, with the quality of the game you play and so it should be bigger than that. "Thierry said a long time ago that he will decide in May, so at the moment it would be unfair to put any more pressure on him. "Maybe he has made up his mind, but because he said he would come and do it in May, we will do it in May, you have to respect that." The 28-year-old has shown little sign of the constant speculation surrounding his future affecting performances on the pitch.
