Michael Carrick has promised Sven-Goran Eriksson he can anchor England's World Cup campaign.

The Tottenham midfielder has emerged as the leading candidate to play the holding role if Eriksson opts to change his usual formation.

The 24-year-old claims to be in the best form of his career after taking tips from club-mate Edgar Davids and helping Spurs into the UEFA Cup.

He has the chance to impress England boss Eriksson on Thursday night when he starts for the B team against Belarus, at Reading.

Carrick said: "This has been my best season, without a doubt - not necessarily for one-off performances, but for consistency.

"I'm playing with a great side which obviously helps me have such a good season.

"I'm maturing, more experienced. Edgar helps. I watch him training and watch his attitude.

"Not just him, it's all the lads. We are all at the age where we know this is the time we have to produce. We are not youngsters any more."
