Sven-Goran Eriksson insists he will not give up hope of Wayne Rooney being fit to star for England in the World Cup finals.

England fly to Germany on June 5and Rooney faces a race against time to be on the plane after breaking a fourth metatarsal bone in his right foot on Saturday. Manchester United expect him to be out for six weeks but England's first group game of the World Cup finals is less than six weeks away.

The England manager said: "Wayne is a world class player and we will give him every chance to play in the World Cup, with such a huge talent you have to do that. I will continue to speak to the medical staff at Manchester United, who have been very helpful."
