Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard and Peter Crouch scored the goals in a 2-0 victory over PSV Eindhoven at Anfield to secure top spot in Group C of the Champions League.
Gerrard struck in the 65th minute when he side-footed past goalkeeper Gomes having been set up by Dirk Kuyt, giving Liverpool a three-point advantage over the Dutch and a better head-to-head record with one match to play.
Crouch then popped up with a late close-range header but of more concern to manager Rafael Benitez were the injuries to Xabi Alonso, Mark Gonzalez and Jermaine Pennant.
